Dental Health Week 2022: Love Your Teeth | Sayers Dental Aesthetics & Implants
Australia is about to experience Dental Health Week, which lasts from August 1 to 7.
Love your teeth is the theme for 2022.
Sayers Dental Aesthetics & Implants aims to encourage good oral health all year long, but Dental Health Week is a great time to emphasise the significance of loving and caring for your teeth and gums.
#1. Use fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth twice daily
Brushing your teeth removes food particles and plaque, a sticky white film that builds on your teeth and includes bacteria.
Following a sugary meal, bacteria in plaque create acids that destroy tooth enamel.
Over time, the acid can erode tooth enamel, resulting in cavities. Unremoved plaque can solidify into tartar, making it more difficult to keep teeth clean.
Tartar buildup on your gums promotes inflammation, which leads to gum disease.
#2. Every day, use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean in between your teeth
Many people ignore daily flossing, yet the ADA considers it a vital element of oral care.
Plaque like to lurk in places that toothbrush bristles cannot reach. That is why it is critical to floss once daily to eliminate plaque between teeth and the gum line.
Floss your teeth once a day, at the very least. According to the ADA, this helps eliminate plaque and food your toothbrush cannot reach.
To floss properly:
- The floss should be tightly held between your thumb and forefinger after cutting off at around 18 inches. Slide it lightly up and down in between your teeth.
- Curve the floss around one tooth when it reaches the gum line. Make sure to go below the gumline as you gently touch the side of the tooth with the floss while making up-and-down motions. Repeat this procedure for the remaining teeth. Remember to floss behind your back teeth.
#3. Limit added sugar intake while maintaining a healthy, balanced diet
What a person consumes can immediately impact the health of their teeth and gums. Different meals can affect gum health, either positively or negatively.
People should integrate the following foods into their diet:
- high-fibre fruits and vegetables, which can aid in the cleaning of the mouth
- Black and green teas, which help in bacterial reduction
- dairy goods such as milk, cheese, and yoghurt, as these foods promote saliva production.
- fluoride-containing foods, such as water and some chicken and fish items
- sugar-free gum, because chewing it stimulates saliva production
The following drinks and meals should be avoided:
- carbonated soft drinks containing phosphoric and citric acids, in addition to sugar
- alcohol, which can cause mouth dryness
- sticky candies and sweets that last a long time in the mouth
- starchy meals that might cause plaque buildup in the teeth
#4. Regularly visit your Hoppers Crossing dentist for check-ups and preventive care
We advise scheduling a teeth cleaning and oral examination every six months to maintain dental health.
Your dentist can spot early warning signs with routine exams so you can immediately begin treatment.
It may be not easy to believe, but maintaining proper oral hygiene and dental care will increase your life expectancy.
Beyond the teeth, there are many other ways that good oral health improves life.
One of our dental hygienists will be able to gently scrape plaque and tartar off your teeth during teeth cleaning.
Only a dentist can remove plaque once it has hardened into tartar. If left untreated, tartar buildup raises your chance of developing gum disease and tooth decay.
